The short answer

Asheville is a mountain honeymoon with personality: the Biltmore Estate, the historic Grove Park Inn, Blue Ridge Parkway drives, waterfalls and one of the South's best food and beer scenes. Go in October for color or May and June for blooms. Check trail and road conditions, since some areas are still recovering from 2024 flooding. Expect roughly $250 to $500 a night.

Best for
  • Hikers who also love good food
  • Couples within driving distance in the Southeast

  • You want beaches or warm water
  • You need every trail and road open on your dates

Asheville is a mountain honeymoon with a creative, slightly offbeat personality. The city sits in a bowl of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina, ringed by forested ridges that turn blue in the haze. Downtown is a compact mix of Art Deco buildings, galleries, bookshops and restaurants. Just outside it are hiking trails, waterfalls and some of the most scenic driving in the eastern United States.

Asheville's grand centerpiece is the Biltmore Estate, the largest privately owned house in the country, built by George Vanderbilt in the 1890s with gardens by Frederick Law Olmsted. A night at the estate or at the historic Omni Grove Park Inn gives the trip a grandeur that most mountain towns can't match.

The region was hit hard by flooding from Hurricane Helene in 2024. Much of the city and its main attractions have reopened, though some trails, roads and riverside businesses have taken longer to recover. Check current conditions for specific places you plan to visit.

Why Honeymoon in Asheville

Asheville balances outdoors and comfort better than most mountain towns. You can spend a morning hiking to a waterfall in Pisgah National Forest and the afternoon touring a Gilded Age mansion. In the evening, dinner downtown and a craft beer on a patio round things out.

It suits couples with different interests. Art lovers can explore the River Arts District, where working studios open to visitors. Hikers and cyclists have hundreds of miles of trails within an hour. Food lovers have a big restaurant scene for a city of its size.

For many East Coast and Southern couples, Asheville is an easy drive. Charlotte is about two hours away. Atlanta and Nashville are around three and a half to four and a half hours. It makes a fine long weekend or a week with day trips.

When to Go

October is the star month. Fall color usually starts at the higher elevations in early October and moves down into the valleys by late October. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Biltmore gardens are at their most colorful, though weekends are busy and hotels pricier.

May and June are excellent too, with rhododendrons and mountain laurel blooming on the ridges and comfortable temperatures. April brings Biltmore's spring tulip displays.

July and August are warm but cooler than the lowland South, with afternoon thunderstorms. Waterfall swimming is at its best.

Winter is quiet and cold, with occasional snow. Biltmore's Christmas season, with the house decorated and candlelight evening tours, is a popular reason to visit in November and December. Higher sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway often close in winter weather.

Where to Stay

For a classic splurge, The Inn on Biltmore Estate sits on a hill on the estate grounds with views over the gardens and mountains. Staying there gives easy access to the house, gardens, winery and trails.

The Omni Grove Park Inn, built in 1913 of local granite boulders, is a historic resort on Sunset Mountain with broad stone terraces, a large underground spa and big stone fireplaces. Its terrace is a popular spot for sunset drinks.

Downtown, boutique hotels and historic inns put you within walking distance of restaurants and bars. Many couples also rent a cabin in the hills for privacy and mountain views.

Expect roughly $250 to $500 a night for good downtown hotels and inns, with Biltmore and Grove Park often higher during October and the holiday season.

Romantic Things to Do

Spend a full day at the Biltmore Estate. Tour the house, walk the formal gardens and the conservatory, then visit the winery for a tasting. Biking or horseback riding on the estate trails adds an active option.

Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, which passes just outside the city. Head south toward Mount Pisgah and Graveyard Fields or north toward Craggy Gardens for wide mountain views. Check the National Park Service road status before you go, since sections close for repairs or weather.

In Pisgah National Forest, Looking Glass Falls is right by the road. Sliding Rock is a natural water slide in summer. DuPont State Recreational Forest has several waterfalls on easy trails.

Back in town, browse the River Arts District studios, then catch live music downtown.

Getting There and Around

Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) is about 20 minutes from downtown. It has nonstop flights from many cities, including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas and several Florida airports, though some routes are seasonal. Charlotte Douglas (CLT), about two hours away, offers far more flights.

By car, Asheville sits where Interstates 40 and 26 meet, making it easy to reach from across the Southeast.

Downtown is walkable. Rideshares cover the city. You will want a car for the Blue Ridge Parkway, waterfalls and hiking trails. If you plan a Biltmore day, the estate has its own parking and shuttles between the house, gardens and village.

Food and Drink

Asheville punches far above its size for food. Southern and Appalachian cooking meets global influences, with dishes built around trout, heirloom grains, foraged mushrooms and local pork.

Cúrate, a Spanish tapas bar from chef Katie Button, is one of the most popular downtown tables. Book ahead, especially on weekends.

Beer is the other big draw. Asheville has dozens of breweries, many clustered in the South Slope neighborhood. National names such as Sierra Nevada and New Belgium also have large East Coast breweries in and near the city.

For something sweeter, try a chocolate shop or a bakery for biscuits in the morning. The Biltmore winery is one of the most visited wineries in the country. Cideries in nearby Hendersonville use local apples.

Honeymoon Tips

Check the status of trails, roads and attractions before you go. Some areas damaged by Hurricane Helene have reopened while others are still being repaired.

Book Biltmore tickets in advance, especially for October and the holiday season. Allow a full day for the estate.

Mountain weather changes fast. Bring layers and rain jackets for both of you, even in summer.

Waterfalls are beautiful but dangerous. Stay off slippery rocks near the top of falls. Never climb on them. People are injured or killed in the area every year.

Downtown is generally safe, though some areas see panhandling. Use rideshares late at night. Dress is casual almost everywhere, with smart casual for the nicer restaurants and the Biltmore dining rooms.
