Why Honeymoon in Miami Beach
You get guaranteed winter sun without leaving the country. When the Northeast is frozen, Miami Beach usually sits in the 70s with clear skies. That makes it a strong option for couples who marry in winter and want warmth without long flights or a passport.
The variety stands out too. Beach mornings can lead to afternoons in the Wynwood art district, the Pérez Art Museum Miami or the Vizcaya estate gardens. Evenings range from rooftop cocktails to live salsa to late tasting menus.
It suits couples with different energy levels. One of you can lounge by the pool while the other paddleboards or rides a bike along the beachwalk. Miami also works as a launch point: many couples spend a few days here before driving to the Florida Keys or boarding a cruise.
When to Go
November through April is peak season, with warm days, lower humidity and the least rain. It is also the busiest and most expensive time. Expect the highest rates around Christmas, New Year's and Art Basel Miami Beach in early December.
March brings spring break crowds to South Beach, which can be loud. Quieter areas like Mid-Beach and Surfside are more relaxed.
May and October are shoulder months, warmer and more humid with occasional rain but lower prices.
June through September is hot, humid and rainy, with brief afternoon storms nearly every day. Hurricane season runs from June through November, with the highest risk from August to October. If you travel then, buy trip insurance and watch forecasts. Seaweed (sargassum) can also wash up on the beaches in warmer months.
Where to Stay
In South Beach, Art Deco boutique hotels line Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue. For a splurge, The Setai has a calm, Asian-influenced design, three pools and a quiet stretch of beach. 1 Hotel South Beach is a large, nature-themed hotel with a rooftop pool.
Mid-Beach has the Faena Hotel Miami Beach, known for its theatrical red-and-gold design, plus the Fontainebleau, a sprawling resort with many pools and restaurants.
Farther north, the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club in Surfside is a refined oceanfront resort in a restored 1930 club. Bal Harbour has upscale hotels near designer shopping.
Miami Beach is pricey in winter. Good boutique hotels often run roughly $300 to $600 a night, while top resorts can top $1,000. Summer rates drop sharply.
Romantic Things to Do
Walk Ocean Drive at night, when the Art Deco hotels glow in neon. The Miami Design Preservation League runs walking tours that explain the architecture.
Spend beach days on the quieter northern stretches or at Lummus Park in South Beach for people-watching. Rent bikes and ride the beachwalk path.
Cross the bay to Wynwood Walls for colorful murals, then dine nearby. Visit Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a waterfront Italian Renaissance-style villa with formal gardens in Coconut Grove.
Drive to Key Biscayne and walk or bike to the Cape Florida Lighthouse in Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. For something wilder, take a day trip into Everglades National Park and bike the Shark Valley loop for alligators and wading birds. A sunset sail on Biscayne Bay adds a quiet evening.
Getting There and Around
Miami International Airport (MIA) has nonstop flights from almost every major US city and is about 20 to 30 minutes from Miami Beach by car. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL), about 45 minutes north, often has lower fares.
Once on the beach, you may not need a car. South Beach is walkable, with the free Miami Beach trolley, Citi Bike rentals and plenty of rideshares. Parking is expensive and limited. Hotel valet can add a lot per night.
Rent a car only for day trips to the Everglades, the Keys or Key Biscayne. Brightline trains connect Miami to Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Orlando if you want to add another stop.
Food and Drink
Miami's food is shaped by Latin America and the Caribbean. Try Cuban coffee at a ventanita (walk-up window), pressed Cuban sandwiches, Peruvian ceviche and Colombian arepas.
Stone crab season runs from mid-October to May. Joe's Stone Crab in South Beach has served them since 1913 and remains a classic, with long waits at peak times.
Head across the bay to Calle Ocho (SW Eighth Street) for Cuban food, cigars and the dominoes games in Máximo Gómez Park.
High-end dining is strong on the beach and across the bay in the Design District and Brickell. Rooftop bars and hotel lounges are good for sunset drinks. Dinner starts later than in most US cities, often at 8 or 9 p.m. Book weekend tables ahead in winter.
Honeymoon Tips
Swim near lifeguard towers and check the flag colors. Rip currents can be strong, especially after storms.
The sun is intense, even in winter. Use reef-friendly sunscreen, wear hats and drink plenty of water.
Mosquitoes are active year-round, more so in summer. Local cases of dengue have been reported in South Florida in recent years. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.
South Beach is busy and generally safe in tourist areas, but watch belongings on the beach and in crowded bars. Use rideshares late at night.
Dress codes vary. Beachwear is fine by day, but nicer restaurants and lounges expect smart resort wear for both of you. Some clubs have strict door policies.
