Why Honeymoon in Pacific Harbour
Pacific Harbour is for couples who like a story to tell. Few honeymooners can say they watched bull sharks feeding a few meters away, rafted a jungle gorge or listened to the legend of the Beqa firewalkers on the island where it began.
It also offers contrast. Spend a day on the river or underwater, then cross to Beqa for a quiet resort with no roads, no crowds and a reef out front.
The area is less polished than Denarau or the Mamanucas, which is part of its charm. Mainland resorts tend to be smaller and simpler, while the Beqa resorts lean toward privacy. Divers will find the soft corals of Beqa Lagoon worth the trip on their own.
When to Go
The dry season, roughly May to October, is the best time. Rain still falls on this side of Viti Levu, which faces the prevailing winds, but days are cooler, the sea is calmer and river trips are more reliable.
November to April is hot, humid and wet, with cyclone risk peaking from January to March. Heavy rain can raise the Navua River and cancel rafting trips. Seas can also be rough for boat transfers to Beqa.
The shark dive runs year-round. Some divers prefer certain months for tiger sharks. Ask the dive operator what to expect during your dates. For most couples, June to September offers the best balance of weather and activity.
Where to Stay
On the mainland, Pacific Harbour has a handful of resorts and villas along the beach and the canals, including the relaxed Uprising Beach Resort. These make a convenient base for rafting and diving.
On Beqa and its nearby islets, small resorts offer seclusion. Royal Davui Island Resort sits on a tiny island off Beqa with hillside villas and a kid-free policy. Lalati Resort and Spa and Beqa Lagoon Resort, the latter popular with divers, are on Beqa itself.
As a rough guide, expect about US$150–350 a night on the mainland. Island resorts often run higher, especially those with meals included, so check what the rate covers.
Romantic Things to Do
Book the Beqa Lagoon shark dive with an experienced operator such as Beqa Adventure Divers. It is for certified divers and runs within a marine reserve supported by local villages.
Raft the Upper Navua River gorge, with waterfalls pouring from the cliffs on both sides. Trips are run by specialist operators and involve a scenic drive inland.
For a gentler day, take a longboat up the Navua River to swim under waterfalls and share lunch with a village.
Snorkel the reefs of Beqa Lagoon from your resort or on a boat trip.
Ask locally about firewalking performances, which are sometimes staged for visitors and honor a tradition from Beqa.
Getting There and Around
Fly into Nadi International Airport (NAN), which has nonstop service from several US cities, including Los Angeles. From there it is about two and a half to three hours by road along the Queens Road.
Nausori Airport (SUV), near Suva, is closer, roughly an hour and a quarter away, but most international flights land in Nadi. Domestic connections to Nausori are available.
Resorts can arrange road transfers. Boat transfers to Beqa usually leave from Pacific Harbour or Navua and take about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the resort. Check weather conditions, since crossings can be rough. Taxis cover local trips on the mainland.
Food and Drink
Most meals are at your resort. Island resorts often offer set menus or meal plans, with fresh fish, tropical fruit and Fijian dishes like kokoda.
On the mainland, Pacific Harbour has a few cafés and restaurants around the shopping area and marina. Suva, about an hour away, has a much wider choice, from Indian and Chinese to modern Pacific food.
Village visits often include a lunch of local dishes such as taro, cassava and fish cooked in coconut milk. Try a lovo, food cooked in an earth oven, if your resort offers it.
Kava is shared at ceremonies. Fiji Bula and Fiji Gold are the local beers.
Honeymoon Tips
The shark dive is for certified divers. If only one of you dives, the other can snorkel, relax at the resort or take a separate trip.
Pack for rain and mud, even in the dry season. Quick-dry clothes and good sandals help on river days.
Respect village customs. Both partners should cover shoulders and knees, remove hats and follow the guide's lead during kava ceremonies.
Mosquitoes are common in this lush area. Dengue occurs in Fiji. Use repellent and cover up at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you go.
Confirm boat transfer times with your resort, since weather can change schedules.
