The short answer

Yes, if you want an African island honeymoon with real wildlife. Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago has towering dunes, tidal sandbars, healthy reefs and dugongs, with only a handful of lodges inside a national park. May to October is best, with calm seas and humpback whales from about July. Lodges run roughly $600 to well over $2,000 per person per night, usually full board (approximate). Plan at least four nights. Don't miss a sunset sail on a traditional dhow.

Best for
  • Snorkelers who want healthy coral reefs
  • Couples who want empty beaches
  • Couples splurging on private villas
Maybe skip it if
  • You're traveling between January and March
  • Malaria precautions would worry you

Off the coast of Vilankulo, a chain of islands built from river sand rises out of water that shifts from jade to deep blue with the tide. Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and tiny Bangué make up the archipelago, protected as a national park since 1971. The largest islands have dunes high enough to look down on the whole chain, freshwater lakes in their interiors and long beaches facing both the mainland and the open ocean.

There is no town on the islands and only a handful of lodges, so the area keeps a quiet, private character. Days revolve around the water: snorkeling with reef fish and turtles, sailing on a dhow with a patched cotton sail or wading across a sandbar exposed at low tide. The archipelago also shelters one of the last dugong populations in the western Indian Ocean. For couples who want an island honeymoon in Africa with real wildlife, Bazaruto sits near the top of the list.

Why Honeymoon in the Bazaruto Archipelago

Bazaruto combines the feel of a remote island with the comfort of a well-run lodge. Most properties have private villas facing the beach, plunge pools and staff who will set up dinner on the sand. Because the islands are inside a national park, development is limited and the beaches stay open and empty.

The marine life sets it apart from other beach destinations. Dugongs, sea turtles, manta rays, dolphins and in the southern winter humpback whales all live in or pass through these waters. The coral reefs are in good condition and snorkeling is often possible straight from a boat in calm, clear water. With the dunes, sandbars and dhows added in, the setting feels unlike anywhere else in the Indian Ocean.

When to Go

May to October is the best time. It is the dry season, with sunny days in the high 70s to low 80s°F, calm seas and lower humidity. Humpback whales pass through from roughly July to October and the visibility for snorkeling is often excellent.

November and April are good shoulder months, warmer but usually still dry enough for a beach holiday. Rates can be lower.

December to March is hot and humid, with rain and a risk of tropical cyclones, mostly from January to March. Some lodges close for a few weeks. Avoid these months if your dates are fixed, or book with flexible cancellation and good travel insurance.

Where to Stay

Benguerra and Bazaruto islands hold most of the lodges. Benguerra has some of the most exclusive properties in the area, including &Beyond Benguerra Island with its beach casitas and Kisawa Sanctuary, a design-led retreat with large private residences. Azura Benguerra is another established option.

On Bazaruto Island, Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort offers beachfront villas with pools and easy access to the island's dunes and lakes.

Most lodges are full board, with snorkeling and some boat trips included. Check carefully what is covered, since diving, fishing and helicopter flights usually cost extra. As a rough guide, island lodges run from about $600 to well over $2,000 per person per night, usually full board; treat these as approximate.

Vilankulo on the mainland has simpler and cheaper lodges if you want a night before or after the islands. Some couples base themselves there and visit the islands by day.

Romantic Things to Do

A dhow trip at sunset is the classic Bazaruto experience. These wooden boats have been sailing the Mozambican coast for centuries. An evening on one with cold drinks and the light fading over the islands is hard to beat.

At low tide, sandbars emerge between the islands. Lodges will drop you off with a picnic, an umbrella and a cooler, then pick you up later. It feels like having your own island.

Snorkel at Two Mile Reef, a well-known reef with tropical fish, turtles and sometimes reef sharks. Divers can explore deeper sites with larger marine life. Climb the high dunes on Bazaruto Island early in the morning for views across the whole archipelago, or take a scenic helicopter flight over the islands and sandbanks.

Getting There and Around

Vilankulo is the gateway. It has flights from Johannesburg and Maputo, though schedules change, so check current routes. From the US, the usual route is a nonstop to Johannesburg, then a connecting flight to Vilankulo.

From Vilankulo, island lodges arrange transfers by helicopter, which takes about 15 minutes, or by boat, which takes roughly an hour depending on the island and the tide. The helicopter is more expensive but also a memorable start to the stay.

On the islands, there are no cars for visitors. Lodges use boats and sand vehicles for excursions. Park fees for the national park are usually charged per day, sometimes added to your lodge bill. Book all transfers through your lodge to line up with flights.

Food and Drink

Seafood dominates. Expect grilled prawns, crayfish, crab curry and fresh fish caught that morning, often served on the beach with peri-peri sauce on the side. Portuguese influences show up in bread rolls, garlic and olive oil, while local dishes such as matapa, cassava leaves cooked with peanuts and coconut, add something different.

Lodges usually serve South African wines. Try the local beers, 2M and Laurentina, at least once. Many lodges offer private dinners on the beach or in the dunes with candles and lanterns. In Vilankulo, simple beachfront restaurants serve good seafood at local prices.

Honeymoon Tips

Plan at least four nights. Transfers take time and the islands reward a slower pace.

Pick your island based on your priorities. Benguerra has the most exclusive lodges, while Bazaruto has the largest dunes and lakes. If one of you wants the reef every day and the other wants a spa morning and a book, both islands handle that easily.

Ask your lodge about the tide table when you arrive. Sandbar picnics and some snorkeling sites work only at certain tides.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a light rash guard for long snorkel sessions and a warm layer for boat rides in the winter months.

The archipelago is a malaria area. Talk to a travel clinic before you go and use repellent in the evenings. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Mozambique before you book.

FAQ

Bazaruto Archipelago honeymoon FAQ

Which island in the Bazaruto Archipelago is best for a honeymoon?

Benguerra and Bazaruto are the two main choices. Benguerra has the most exclusive lodges, including &Beyond Benguerra Island and Kisawa Sanctuary. Bazaruto is the largest island, with the biggest dunes and Anantara's resort. Both offer excellent snorkeling, dhow trips and sandbar picnics, so choose based on the lodge style you prefer.

Can we see dugongs in Bazaruto?

Possibly. The archipelago is home to a small dugong population, estimated at a few hundred animals at most. They feed on seagrass beds in the channels. Some lodges run boat or helicopter trips to look for them. Sightings are never guaranteed, but they are more likely here than almost anywhere else in the western Indian Ocean.

How long should we stay in the Bazaruto Archipelago?

Four to five nights is a good length. That allows time for a dhow trip, snorkeling, a sandbar picnic, a dune hike and some quiet days by the pool. Fewer than three nights feels rushed given the travel time to reach the islands.

Is the Bazaruto Archipelago affected by the US travel advisory?

The State Department rates Mozambique Level 2 overall. Its Do Not Travel warnings cover the far north, including Cabo Delgado Province, several hundred miles away. The Bazaruto Archipelago lies in Inhambane Province in the south and is not under those warnings. Check the latest advisory before you travel.

Is diving good in the Bazaruto Archipelago?

Yes. Reefs such as Two Mile Reef offer good visibility and a wide variety of tropical fish, turtles and rays. Some dives can bring encounters with larger species, including manta rays and dolphins. Most lodges have a dive center or work with one. Bring your certification card and logbook.
