Hotel Cala Saona & Spa is the Formentera hotel for couples who want sunset over the sea. It stands directly above Cala Saona, a small cove of white sand and turquoise water on the island's west coast, framed by low cliffs and pine forest. Because the cove faces west, the sun sets straight across the water most evenings and the hotel's infinity pool and terraces are built to enjoy it.
The hotel has 90 rooms, a spa with treatment rituals, a gym and padel courts and dining indoors, on the terrace and by the beach from breakfast until midnight. Spa access is included with most rooms, which adds real value on a honeymoon.
It suits couples who want a full-service hotel with a beach on the doorstep and a quieter setting than Es Pujols or Migjorn. The design uses wood, stone and natural textures for a calm, earthy feel. The trade-offs: it is one of the larger hotels on the island and welcomes families, so the pool can be busy in July and August. The standard doubles are compact at 21 square meters, so honeymooners should aim for a sea-view junior suite.

Why Couples Love Cala Saona
The cove sets the tone. Cala Saona is one of the prettiest beaches on Formentera, a small bay of soft sand and very clear water between reddish rocks, backed by pine trees. You walk straight down from the hotel for a morning swim before the day visitors arrive.
The sunsets are the other reason to come. With the cove facing west, evenings bring long golden light over the sea and on clear days you can see the outline of Ibiza on the horizon. Watching it from the infinity pool or the terrace with a drink in hand is the ritual most guests remember.
The hotel's philosophy is about slowing down. The language on its website is all about rhythm and following the movement of the sun and the spa programs match that idea, with herbal and aromatherapy rituals and morning sun salutations.
Rooms and Suites to Book
The hotel has 11 room types across its 90 rooms. The key choices:
- Doble Garden View and Doble Pine View: 21 square meters, facing the gardens or the pine forest. Good value but compact.
- Doble Pool View: ground-floor rooms above the pool terrace.
- Doble Saona Sea View: 21 square meters, directly facing the sea.
- Junior Suite Saona Sea View: 48 square meters, facing the sea, with a terrace and jacuzzi, a Nespresso machine, bathrobes and beach bags. The honeymoon pick.
- Gran Suite Saona Sea View: 54 square meters, with a living room and sea views.
The Junior Suite is the one to book. A private jacuzzi on a sea-facing terrace at sunset is exactly the honeymoon moment Formentera is famous for. If budget is tight, a Doble Saona Sea View gives you the view in a smaller room. Spa access is included with most rooms; confirm it for your category when booking.
Food, Drink and the Spa
Dining runs from 8 a.m. to midnight, indoors, on the terrace and by the beach. Menus focus on Mediterranean dishes and local produce, with signature cocktails and some fusion touches. Sunset drinks on the terrace are the evening's main event, so reserve a table if you want the best view.
The spa offers herbal and aromatherapy rituals, along with a gym and large padel courts for active couples. There are also morning routines such as sun salutations and training sessions. A couples ritual after a day in the sun is a good way to recover from salt and heat.
For variety, drive to Sant Francesc, about 10 to 15 minutes away, for dinner in its small squares, or to the beach restaurants along Migjorn for a long lunch. Book ahead in July and August, when Formentera's best tables fill quickly.
Why guests fall for it
Things to Do
Spend your mornings at the cove, ideally early before day visitors arrive. Then rent a scooter, electric car or bicycles to explore the island.
Cap de Barbaria, the lighthouse on the island's southern tip, is about 15 minutes away and is a classic sunset spot. Ses Illetes, the famous sand spit in the north, has some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean; arrive early to avoid crowds and note that vehicles pay an access fee for the natural park. From there you can wade or take a boat to the Espalmador islet.
Drive to La Mola on the eastern plateau for its lighthouse and craft market, or cycle the island's green routes through farmland and salt flats. The sun is intense, so bring high-SPF sunscreen, hats and plenty of water. On windy days, check sea conditions before swimming beyond the cove.
Getting There
Formentera has no airport. Fly to Ibiza Airport (IBZ), take a taxi of about 20 minutes to Ibiza port, then a fast ferry of about 30 minutes to La Savina. From La Savina, Cala Saona is roughly 15 minutes by taxi.
There are no regular nonstop flights from the US to Ibiza, so most couples connect through Barcelona, Madrid or another European hub. A few nights in Barcelona make a good start to the trip.
Rent transport in La Savina; the hotel has private parking. Formentera's season is short, with many hotels and restaurants closing from November to April, so check the hotel's opening dates for your travel. June and September offer the best balance of warm water, sunshine and calmer beaches, while May and early October are quieter still.
Is It Worth It?
For couples who want a beach, a spa and sunsets in one place, yes. Approximate rates often start around $350 a night for two in the shoulder season, with sea-view junior suites and July and August much higher. Spa access included with most rooms adds value.
It is not the right choice for couples who want an intimate boutique hotel; with 90 rooms, it is one of Formentera's larger properties and families are welcome. Gecko Hotel & Beach Club is smaller and right on Migjorn, while Es Marès Hotel & Spa in Sant Francesc offers a village setting.
For most honeymooners, though, Cala Saona's combination of a beautiful cove, an infinity pool and the island's best sunsets is hard to beat. Book a Junior Suite with a jacuzzi and you will spend every evening on your terrace.
