F Zeen Kefalonia

A kid-free wellness retreat between Mount Ainos and the calm water of Lourdas Bay

F Zeen Kefalonia is a kid-free beachfront hotel on Lourdas Bay, on the quieter south coast of the island. It suits couples who want a slow honeymoon built around the sea, a spa, yoga and good food rather than nightlife. Guests must be 16 or older, so the pools and the beach stay calm all day.

The hotel sits where the green flanks of Mount Ainos run down almost to the water. That gives it something many Greek island hotels lack: a real mountain backdrop, with pine forest above and a long curve of sand below. The look inside is natural and pared back, with raw textures, linen and plenty of shade.

It is not a party hotel and not a grand palace. Think of it as a wellness retreat that happens to have a good beach bar. Breakfast is included with most rates. Couples who book early in the season can often stay for well under what similar hotels charge on Mykonos or Santorini. Reviews from guests are consistently excellent, especially for the staff. If you want to explore Kefalonia, you will need a car, since Myrtos and Fiskardo are well over an hour away.

Highlights at a glance

  • Kid-free, with guests 16 and over
  • Private beach on sheltered Lourdas Bay
  • Full-service spa with sound healing
  • Two restaurants using garden produce
  • Mount Ainos National Park on the doorstep

Why Couples Love F Zeen

The draw is the combination of quiet and comfort. Because the hotel is kid-free, there is no splashing at the pool and no early dinner rush. Days tend to follow the same easy pattern: a swim in the bay before breakfast, a yoga class or a spa treatment, a long lunch in the shade, then sunset drinks at the beach bar.

Lourdas Bay faces south, so the water is usually sheltered and warm by June. The hotel has its own stretch of sand with loungers, umbrellas and towels. Snorkeling gear, kayaks and paddleboards are available for exploring the rocky edges of the bay.

The setting under Mount Ainos also means good hiking close by. Couples who like to earn their dinner can head up into the national park, where the black fir forest feels a world away from the beach.

Rooms and Villas to Book

Rooms are grouped into categories called Retreats, with garden, partial sea or full sea views. The smallest are compact, so for a honeymoon it is worth paying for a sea view and a little more space.

  • Sea-view Retreat rooms: the sensible choice for most couples, with a terrace facing the bay.
  • Retreats with a pool: some categories add a pool shared or semi-private with the terrace, which is lovely in July and August.
  • Suites: larger rooms with king beds and room to spread out over a week.
  • One-bedroom villas: the most private option for two, with extra living space.

The two- and three-bedroom villas are designed for groups of friends. Ask when booking which rooms sit closest to the beach and which are higher up the slope, since the walk and the view differ a lot between them.

Food, Drink and the Spa

The hotel runs two main restaurants, Gaia and Selene, plus bars and a beach bar. The kitchen leans on produce from the chef's organic garden and local suppliers, so menus shift with the season. Expect Greek and Mediterranean cooking with a lighter, wellness-minded touch, plus plenty of fish and vegetables.

Breakfast is served daily and is included with most rates. For dinner, book a table on the terrace at sunset and take your time.

The spa is one of the main reasons to choose F Zeen. It offers massages, facials, reflexology and aromatherapy, along with sound healing sessions. Book treatments when you reserve the room if you travel in peak season. Yoga and other classes run through the week. They are a nice way for one partner to keep a routine while the other sleeps in.

Things to Do

Kefalonia is a big island, so plan one or two driving days rather than trying to see everything. From Lourdas, the capital Argostoli is about half an hour away for an evening stroll along the harbor and dinner in town.

A classic day out heads north to the lookout above Myrtos Beach, then on to the tiny village of Assos and its Venetian castle. Another runs east to Melissani Lake, where boatmen row you into a cave lit blue by sunlight, then to Sami for lunch.

Closer to the hotel, Mount Ainos National Park has marked trails through fir forest with views over the Ionian Sea. Wine lovers should visit the Omala valley to taste Robola, the island's crisp white. Boat trips around the south coast or across to Ithaca can be arranged through the hotel.

Getting There

Kefalonia International Airport (EFL) is about a 30-minute drive from the hotel. In summer there are direct flights from many European cities. From the US, most couples connect through Athens, then take a short domestic flight, or fly via another European hub.

The hotel can arrange private transfers. Even so, a rental car is worth having for at least a few days, because public buses are infrequent and taxis add up quickly. Roads are generally good but narrow and winding in the hills, so allow more time than the map suggests.

The hotel operates seasonally, roughly from spring into autumn. The outdoor pool season runs from about May to mid-October. Shoulder months like late May, June and September bring warm water and lower rates.

Is It Worth It?

For couples who want a restful, kid-free week by the sea, F Zeen is strong value. Rates in the shoulder season often start around the mid-hundreds of dollars a night including breakfast, which is modest for a hotel of this standard in Greece. These figures are approximate and climb in July and August.

It is less suited to couples who want to walk out of the hotel into a lively village. Lourdas itself is very small, so evenings out mean a drive or a taxi to Argostoli. If you want harbor-side dining every night, base yourselves in Fiskardo instead. If you want the island's most dramatic beaches on your doorstep, the northwest is closer.

Pick F Zeen if your perfect honeymoon day is a swim, a massage and a long dinner, with the rest of Kefalonia saved for a couple of road trips.

Insider tips

  1. Pay for a sea-view Retreat; the garden rooms feel small for a honeymoon.
  2. Book spa treatments when you book the room in July and August.
  3. Rent a car for two days and do Myrtos and Assos in one loop, Melissani and Sami in another.
  4. Hike Mount Ainos early in the morning before the heat builds.

FAQ

F Zeen Kefalonia questions, answered

Is F Zeen Kefalonia kid-free?

Yes. The hotel only accepts guests aged 16 and older, so the pools, beach and restaurants are calm and geared to couples. It is a good fit if you want a quiet honeymoon. Groups of adult friends do stay in the larger villas, but the overall atmosphere stays relaxed rather than lively.

How much does F Zeen Kefalonia cost?

Entry rooms for two often start in the mid-hundreds of dollars a night in the shoulder season, usually with breakfast included. Suites, pool rooms and villas cost considerably more. July and August prices rise sharply. These figures are approximate, so compare the hotel's own site with booking sites for your dates.

Do we need a car at F Zeen?

For a stay of more than a few days, yes. The hotel is in a very small village on the south coast. The island's best-known sights, like Myrtos Beach, Assos and Melissani Lake, are an hour or more away. Rent a car for two or three days and spend the rest of the time at the hotel.

When is the best time to stay?

June and September are the sweet spots. The sea is warm, the hotel is open with every facility running and prices are lower than in midsummer. Late May is quieter still but the water is cooler. July and August are hot and the island is busy, so book well ahead if those are your dates.

Is the beach good for swimming?

Lourdas Bay faces south and is usually sheltered, with a long stretch of sand and clear water. The hotel's section has loungers, umbrellas and a beach bar. Like most Ionian beaches it shelves fairly quickly, so it suits swimmers. Kayaks, paddleboards and snorkeling gear let you explore the rocks at either end.
