Grenada vs Saint Lucia

Two green volcanic islands: one famous for its Pitons, the other for its spices.

The short answer

Saint Lucia is the bigger honeymoon statement: the Pitons outside an open-wall suite, a deep bench of romantic resorts and easy all-inclusives in the north. Grenada is the quieter, more local choice, with a two-mile beach at Grand Anse, small independent hotels, spice and cocoa estates and lower prices. Pick Saint Lucia for wow factor and a once-in-a-lifetime room. Pick Grenada if you would rather spend less, eat well and feel like you found somewhere before everyone else.

Grenada and Saint Lucia are cousins in the Windward Islands. Both are steep, green and volcanic, with rainforest interiors, waterfalls and cocoa growing in the hills. Both are English-speaking, use the Eastern Caribbean dollar alongside US dollars and have nonstops from a handful of US cities. Neither is a flat sandbar island, which is exactly why couples choose them.

Saint Lucia is the famous one. Its twin Pitons rise straight out of the sea near Soufrière, where resorts like Jade Mountain and Ladera turned the open-air suite with a private plunge pool into an art form. The north adds calm beaches, all-inclusives and a Friday night street party. Grenada is the Spice Isle, with nutmeg on its flag, the pastel horseshoe harbor of St. George's and the long sweep of Grand Anse beach. Its hotels are small and mostly independent. Its sister island Carriacou feels decades away. Here is how to choose between them.

  • Hiking Gros Piton or soaking in volcanic mud is on your list

Scenery: The Pitons or the Spice Isle

Saint Lucia's landscape is the headline. Petit Piton and Gros Piton, two forested volcanic spires, rise straight out of the sea on the southwest coast. Around them the island tumbles into rainforest, waterfalls, cocoa estates and fishing villages. It is only about 27 miles long, yet it packs a lot of drama into that space. Many couples pick their hotel for the view alone.

Grenada is green and steep too, but softer on the eye and more lived-in. The interior holds Grand Etang, a crater lake in the mountains with forest trails and mona monkeys, plus the Seven Sisters waterfalls. St. George's curls around a horseshoe harbor with pastel warehouses and red roofs climbing the hills. The scent of nutmeg, cinnamon and cocoa drifts from roadside stalls. Saint Lucia wins on pure spectacle. Grenada wins on charm, with a landscape shaped more by farming and fishing than by tourism.

Beaches and the Sea

Here Grenada has the advantage. Grand Anse runs for about two miles south of St. George's with calm water and soft sand. Morne Rouge Bay next door is quieter still. On Carriacou, small reef-fringed beaches and Sandy Island make easy boat days. Divers and snorkelers love Grenada's wrecks and the underwater sculpture park at Molinere Bay.

Saint Lucia's best beaches are smaller and often framed by cliffs. Anse Chastanet near Soufrière has a superb snorkeling reef right off the sand. Sugar Beach sits in the valley between the Pitons. In the north, Rodney Bay and the area around Gros Islet offer calm, swimmable water and a lively marina. If a long beach walk at sunset matters to you both, Grenada fits better. If you're happy to trade sand for scenery, Saint Lucia's coves are hard to beat. On either island, a sunset sail along the leeward coast is a highlight.

Where You Will Stay

Saint Lucia has one of the strongest honeymoon hotel lineups in the Caribbean. In Soufrière, Jade Mountain's open-wall sanctuaries with infinity pools are kid-free. Ladera Resort, also kid-free, perches on a ridge about 1,000 feet above the sea. Anse Chastanet is a relaxed beach resort with a reef. Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort is the only resort between the Pitons. Zoëtry Marigot Bay is an all-inclusive on one of the island's prettiest bays. In the north, Sandals St. Lucia Grand Bay, formerly Sandals Grande St. Lucian, is couples-only with overwater bungalows.

Grenada's hotels are smaller and mostly independent, many of them family-run, with only one or two large properties. Most cluster around Grand Anse, Morne Rouge and the coves of Lance aux Epines. A Sandals resort sits near the airport on Pink Gin Beach. Carriacou has tiny guesthouses. If the room itself is the reason for the trip, Saint Lucia is the clear pick.

Food, Rum and Days Out

Grenada is a food-lover's island. Tour cocoa estates like Belmont where chocolate is made from tree to bar, taste rum at River Antoine where century-old equipment still runs and try oil down, the national one-pot stew of breadfruit, callaloo and dumplings in coconut milk. Nutmeg ice cream and cocoa tea are musts. On Fridays, Gouyave's Fish Friday street party is the place to be.

Saint Lucia's days out are more about adventure. Hike Gros Piton, soak in the mud baths at the Sulphur Springs, visit Diamond Falls and tour a cocoa estate. In the north, walk up to Fort Rodney on Pigeon Island and join the Gros Islet Friday street party. Kwéyòl culture shows in the music and food, with Creole Day in October as a showcase. Both islands give you rainforest hikes; take a guide on either. Grenada leans toward tasting and wandering, while Saint Lucia leans toward hiking and soaking.

Flights and Transfers

Both are four to five hours from the Northeast. Grenada's Maurice Bishop International (GND) has nonstops from Miami on American and New York JFK on JetBlue, with Charlotte and Atlanta in some winter seasons. Miami is about 3.5 hours away. The big plus: Grand Anse is only 10 to 15 minutes from the airport.

Saint Lucia's Hewanorra International (UVF) has nonstops from several US hubs, including Miami, New York, Atlanta and Charlotte. The catch is location. Hewanorra sits in the far south, about an hour from Soufrière and 1.5 hours from Rodney Bay on narrow, winding roads. Helicopter transfers are a fast, scenic alternative at a much higher price.

Both drive on the left. Most couples on either island skip the rental car and use transfers, taxis and guided tours. In Grenada, confirm whether a taxi quote is in EC or US dollars before you set off. Saint Lucia uses UK-style three-pin plugs, so pack an adapter.

Safety and Comfort

The US State Department rates Grenada at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, because of crime, noting that violent crime can occur anywhere and police response can be slower than at home. For most honeymooners at established hotels, that means sensible habits rather than a change of plans: licensed taxis or hotel drivers at night, valuables in the safe and no isolated beaches or trails after dark.

Saint Lucia asks for similar common sense. Use resort transfers or taxis your hotel recommends at night rather than walking unlit roads. Keep valuables minimal at the Friday street party. On both islands, beach vendors and unofficial guides can be persistent with both of you; a friendly, firm no works. Cover up away from the beach and leave camouflage clothing at home.

Mosquitoes carry dengue on both islands, so use repellent at dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you go. Travel insurance with medical cover is wise for either.

Cost and Timing

Grenada is the better value. Midrange beach hotels around Grand Anse and Morne Rouge typically cost $250 to $450 a night, simple hotels and guesthouses $120 to $250 and the top boutique and luxury resorts $600 to well over $1,000 in high season. A nice dinner for two with drinks often runs $100 to $180.

Saint Lucia's most famous suites in Soufrière often start in the low four figures a night in peak season. Upscale boutique and beachfront hotels range from several hundred to around $1,000 or more, while all-inclusives in the north sit in a mid-to-high range with meals and drinks included. Helicopter transfers add more. All prices are approximate.

The seasons are similar. Saint Lucia's dry season runs roughly December through May, Grenada's about January through May. Hurricane season covers June through November for both. Festivals differ: Saint Lucia has its Jazz and Arts Festival in May and Carnival in July, while Grenada's Spicemas fills August with soca and paint.

FAQ

Grenada vs Saint Lucia: your questions

Is Grenada or Saint Lucia more romantic?

Saint Lucia has the more famous romance, thanks to the Pitons and open-wall suites at Jade Mountain and Ladera. Grenada's romance is quieter: a sunset catamaran over the sculptures at Molinere Bay, dinners on Grand Anse and small hotels where staff learn your names. Choose the setting that matches how you two like to unwind.

Which island has better beaches?

Grenada. Grand Anse runs for about two miles with calm water and soft sand, while Morne Rouge Bay and Carriacou add quieter options. Saint Lucia's beaches are smaller coves, often dramatic and great for snorkeling, such as Anse Chastanet, with calmer, longer stretches in the north around Rodney Bay.

Is Grenada safe compared with Saint Lucia?

The US State Department rates Grenada at Level 2 because of crime. Most couples at established resorts have trouble-free trips with simple precautions: licensed taxis at night, valuables locked away and guided hikes. The same habits make sense in Saint Lucia. Check the current advisories for both before you book.

Does Grenada have all-inclusive resorts like Saint Lucia?

A few, including a Sandals resort near the airport on Pink Gin Beach. Most of Grenada's best hotels are room-only or offer meal plans, since eating out is part of the fun there. Saint Lucia has more all-inclusive choice, from Zoëtry Marigot Bay to the couples-only Sandals St. Lucia Grand Bay in the north.

Can we visit both Grenada and Saint Lucia on one honeymoon?

It is possible on a trip of ten days or more. Getting between them takes a regional flight, often with a connection, so you lose part of a day. With a week, most couples do better splitting Saint Lucia between Soufrière and the north, or pairing Grand Anse with two or three nights on Carriacou.
