Saint Lucia vs Jamaica

Twin peaks and open-wall suites, or reggae, Negril sunsets and the original couples-only resorts

The short answer

Pick Saint Lucia if you want a quieter, more dramatic island: the Pitons, rainforest, mud baths and open-wall suites that feel like nowhere else in the Caribbean. Pick Jamaica if you want big personality and easy logistics: nonstops from dozens of US cities, couples-only all-inclusives where everything is covered, Negril's cliff sunsets and reggae drifting from beach bars. Saint Lucia is the more romantic landscape. Jamaica is the better value and the more lively, sociable honeymoon.

Both islands have been honeymoon favorites for generations and both do romance with real confidence. They do it in very different styles.

Saint Lucia is small and volcanic. Petit Piton and Gros Piton rise straight out of the sea on the southwest coast, rainforest covers the interior and the island is only about 27 miles long. Its fame rests on a handful of boutique resorts near Soufrière, where suites have one wall open to the view and a private plunge pool on the terrace. The mood is hushed and scenic.

Jamaica is much bigger and louder. It is where the couples-only all-inclusive took off, where Hollywood stars hid away in the 1950s and where jerk smoke, reggae and waterfalls are part of daily life. Negril offers beach-and-cliff bohemia, Montego Bay offers airport convenience and Ocho Rios offers waterfalls and gardens. There's more choice at every price.

Here is how to decide which island suits the two of you.

Scenery and Setting

Saint Lucia's scenery is its headline. The Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dominate the southwest, framing resorts, beaches and villages. Rainforest, waterfalls and cocoa estates fill the valleys. Beaches are mostly coves with golden or darker volcanic sand and many couples spend as much time on their terrace as on the sand.

Jamaica's landscape is broader and varied. Negril's Seven Mile Beach is long and calm, with soft sand. Its West End cliffs drop into clear coves. Montego Bay has resort beaches minutes from the airport. Ocho Rios is a garden coast with waterfalls like Dunn's River Falls tumbling out of green hills. Inland, the Blue Mountains rise to coffee farms and cool forest. Port Antonio and Treasure Beach offer quieter, wilder corners.

Saint Lucia is one great view. Jamaica is many different moods on one large island.

Flights From the US

Jamaica is one of the easiest Caribbean islands to reach. Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay has nonstop flights from many US cities, from about one and a half to five hours. Many resorts are minutes from the airport and Negril is about an hour and a half away by road. Kingston's Norman Manley International (KIN) serves the capital and the east.

Saint Lucia has fewer flights. Hewanorra International (UVF) has nonstops from several US hubs, including Miami, New York, Atlanta and Charlotte, with flying time of roughly four to five hours from the Northeast. Then comes an hour's drive to Soufrière or an hour and a half to Rodney Bay on winding roads, unless you take a short helicopter transfer.

If you're flying from a smaller US city, Jamaica will likely offer a nonstop where Saint Lucia doesn't.

Timing Your Honeymoon

The calendars match. In both islands, the best weather runs from mid-December through April, with dry, sunny days and a little less humidity. This is peak season, with the highest rates and busiest resorts, especially around the holidays and in February and March.

May and June are excellent shoulder months in both, with good weather and better value. Saint Lucia's Jazz and Arts Festival is typically held in May.

Hurricane season runs from June through November, with the highest risk from August through October. Hurricane Melissa caused serious damage in western Jamaica in October 2025, so confirm your resort's status before you book. Saint Lucia's wet season, which overlaps hurricane season, brings short, heavy bursts of rain that keep the rainforest green. In either island, flexible rates and travel insurance are wise for summer and early autumn trips.

Where You Will Stay

Saint Lucia's honeymoon resorts are boutique and scenic. Jade Mountain and Ladera Resort are kid-free, with open-wall suites and private plunge pools facing the Pitons. Anse Chastanet is a barefoot beach resort on a reef-fringed bay, while Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort, sits in the valley between the peaks. In the north, Sandals Grande St. Lucian is a kid-free all-inclusive on the Rodney Bay peninsula.

Jamaica has one of the widest resort ranges in the Caribbean. Couples Swept Away on Seven Mile Beach is a couples-only all-inclusive with a huge sports complex and included diving. Rockhouse Hotel in Negril's West End has thatched villas and ladders into clear coves. Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay has overwater villas and a private island. Round Hill has old-Hollywood villas, Jamaica Inn has blue-and-white verandahs and GoldenEye, Ian Fleming's old estate, has lagoon cottages.

Budget and Value

Jamaica is the better value overall, thanks to strong competition among all-inclusives. Couples-only all-inclusives run roughly $400 to $1,000 a night for many room categories, with butler suites and overwater villas well above that. Boutique and historic luxury hotels run roughly $300 to $1,500 a night. Excursions like river rafting or waterfall tours add modest extra costs.

Saint Lucia's famous resorts are pricier. Ultra-luxury open-wall suites and villas in Soufrière often run from the low four figures per night upward in peak season and upscale boutique resorts range from several hundred to around a thousand dollars a night. Northern all-inclusives cost less.

All figures are approximate and vary by season, room category and promotion. If an open-wall suite is the dream, Saint Lucia is worth the premium. If you want more resort for your money, Jamaica wins.

Adventures and Culture

Saint Lucia offers nature and quiet adventure. Hike Gros Piton with a guide, soak in the Sulphur Springs mud baths and swim under Diamond Falls. Tour a cocoa estate and taste chocolate made from local beans. Snorkel the reef off Anse Chastanet, zipline through the rainforest or take a sunset sail along the coast. Friday nights in Gros Islet bring a lively street party.

Jamaica's highlights are cultural and energetic. Climb Dunn's River Falls together near Ocho Rios and raft a river on bamboo. Float in a glowing lagoon at night. Watch cliff divers at Rick's Café in Negril and take a sunset catamaran. Sip coffee grown in the Blue Mountains and eat jerk from a roadside grill. Visit YS Falls or the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston. Music runs through everything, from reggae and ska to dancehall.

Safety and Getting Around

The fact table shows the State Department levels and the difference is worth understanding. Jamaica is rated Level 2 because of crime and health risks. Most violent crime happens away from tourist areas, but don't wander off-resort on foot at night and book tours through your hotel or reputable operators. Persistent beach vendors can be an annoyance in some areas. Saint Lucia's resorts feel very secure, though the usual care applies in towns after dark.

In both islands, driving is on the left, roads are winding and most couples rely on resort transfers and taxis rather than renting a car. Jamaica's distances are bigger: driving from Negril to Ocho Rios takes three to three and a half hours. In Saint Lucia, Soufrière to Rodney Bay takes over an hour.

Mosquitoes are present on both. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices.

Choosing or Combining

Combining Saint Lucia and Jamaica is possible but rarely worth it. They are far apart and connecting usually means a US hub such as Miami, which costs a full day. With two weeks, you could spend a week in Saint Lucia and another in Jamaica, but most couples get more from splitting one island between two bases.

In Saint Lucia, pair four nights in an open-wall suite near the Pitons with three nights at a beach resort in the north. In Jamaica, pair four nights in Negril for beaches and sunsets with three in Ocho Rios or Oracabessa for waterfalls and gardens.

With five to seven nights, choose Saint Lucia for scenery and seclusion or Jamaica for easy flights, all-inclusive value and a livelier island vibe. Both are classic choices for good reason.

FAQ

Saint Lucia vs Jamaica: your questions

Is Saint Lucia or Jamaica better for a honeymoon?

It depends on your style. Saint Lucia is quieter and more dramatic, with the Pitons and open-wall suites. Jamaica has easier flights, more all-inclusive options and a livelier culture of music and food. Couples who want scenery and seclusion lean Saint Lucia. Couples who want value and energy lean Jamaica.

Which is more expensive?

Saint Lucia's famous Soufrière resorts generally cost more, often from the low four figures per night in peak season. Jamaica's couples-only all-inclusives run roughly $400 to $1,000 a night for many rooms, with everything included. Both have options at many price points. All figures are approximate.

Is Jamaica safe for honeymooners?

Most honeymooners have trouble-free trips. The State Department rates Jamaica Level 2 because of crime and health risks, with most violent crime away from tourist areas. Stay at reputable resorts, book tours through your hotel and avoid walking off-resort at night. After Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, check your resort's status before booking.

Which has better beaches?

Jamaica, mainly thanks to Negril's Seven Mile Beach with soft sand and calm water. Saint Lucia's beaches are mostly smaller coves with golden or darker sand. Couples choose Saint Lucia for its landscape and private plunge pools more than its beaches.

How long should we stay?

Five to seven nights is the sweet spot for either. In Saint Lucia, a week lets you split time between Soufrière and the north. In Jamaica, a week allows two bases, such as Negril and Ocho Rios. With fewer than five nights, choose one resort and stay put.
