The short answer

Ischia suits couples who want a slow Italian island honeymoon with thermal pools, sea swims and good food at better value than Capri. Go May, June or September and plan four to seven nights. Base yourselves in Forio, Lacco Ameno or car-free Sant'Angelo. It is a fast ferry from Naples, so it pairs easily with Procida, Capri or the Amalfi Coast.

Best for
  • Spa lovers who want hot springs by the sea
  • Couples seeking calmer island life than Capri
  • A relaxing finale after busy cities
Maybe skip it if
  • You want a glamorous nightlife scene
  • You dislike ferry transfers with luggage

Ischia is a great honeymoon island if you want the Bay of Naples without Capri's day-tripper crush. It is larger and noticeably calmer. Its volcanic geology gives it something no other Italian island matches: hot springs everywhere, piped into terraced thermal gardens, hotel pools and even a cove where warm water bubbles into the sea. Go from May to June or in September, stay four to seven nights and budget well below Capri for similar comfort.

The island sits about 30 kilometers from Naples and is a fast-ferry hop from the city. Its six towns each have a personality. Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte have the shopping streets and the castle on its rock. Lacco Ameno and Forio on the west coast face the sunset. Sant'Angelo, in the south, is a car-free fishing village on a tiny isthmus. Italians and Germans have come here for spa holidays for generations, so the hospitality is polished without feeling showy. It pairs well with a few nights in Naples, Procida or the Amalfi Coast.

Why Honeymoon on Ischia

The thermal water is the reason. After long flights and a busy run through Rome or Florence, a few days moving between warm pools, sea swims and long lunches feels restorative. Many hotels have their own thermal pools; others are a short ride from big thermal parks with a dozen or more pools set among gardens.

Ischia also feels lived-in. Locals far outnumber visitors outside August, prices in trattorias are reasonable and you can still find a quiet strip of beach. Giardini La Mortella in Forio, created by the composer William Walton and his wife Susana, is one of the loveliest gardens in southern Italy. The Castello Aragonese, joined to Ischia Ponte by a stone causeway since the fifteenth century, makes a dramatic backdrop for an evening walk. It is an island built for slowing down together.

When to Go

May, June and September are ideal: warm sea, open thermal parks and manageable crowds. April and October are also pleasant, especially if the spa is your priority, since the thermal pools are warm regardless of air temperature. Some hotels and parks open around Easter and close in late October or early November.

July and August are hot and very busy, with Italian families filling the beaches and ferries running full. Book well ahead if you must travel then.

In winter many hotels close, though a handful of spa hotels stay open year-round. A winter stay can work for a quiet thermal retreat, but it is not a beach trip.

Where to Stay

Forio and Lacco Ameno, on the western shore, are the favorites for couples: sunset views, the best thermal parks nearby and a cluster of good hotels. Mezzatorre, set in a sixteenth-century watchtower on a wooded headland near Lacco Ameno, is a well-known luxury choice with its own spa. Regina Isabella in Lacco Ameno is a long-established grand hotel with thermal treatments.

Sant'Angelo suits couples who want a car-free village of cafés and boat moorings, with quick water taxis to nearby beaches and springs. Ischia Porto is livelier and handy for ferries, while Ischia Ponte has the most atmosphere after dark.

Look for a hotel with its own thermal pool and sea views. A room up a hillside often means a quieter night and a better panorama, though you may rely on taxis or buses.

Romantic Things to Do

Spend a full day at a thermal park such as Poseidon in Forio or Negombo in Lacco Ameno, moving between pools of different temperatures and the sea. Go early to claim loungers.

Take a water taxi from Sant'Angelo to the Bay of Sorgeto, where hot springs mix with sea water in rocky pools. It is especially atmospheric in the evening. Hike up Mount Epomeo, about 788 meters high, for views across the Gulf of Naples, then come down to a farmhouse lunch on the slopes.

Visit the Castello Aragonese late in the day, when the light hits the walls and the views reach Procida and Vesuvius. Rent a small boat to circle the island and stop for swims in coves only reachable from the water.

Getting There and Around

Fly into Naples (NAP). Seasonal summer nonstops from the US have linked Naples with the New York area and Chicago in recent years; otherwise connect through Rome or a European hub. From the airport, a taxi to Molo Beverello or Calata Porta di Massa takes about 20 minutes. Fast ferries reach Ischia in roughly an hour, with slower car ferries also running. Boats also leave from Pozzuoli.

On the island, buses circle the coast frequently and are cheap. Taxis and small three-wheeled microtaxis are easy to find. Rental scooters are popular, though roads are narrow and busy in summer. A car is rarely necessary and can be a hassle to park.

Food and Drink

The signature dish is coniglio all'ischitana, rabbit slow-cooked with tomato, garlic, white wine and herbs, traditionally served with the sauce over pasta first. Farm restaurants in the hills specialize in it. Seafood dominates the coast: spaghetti with clams, grilled catch of the day and fried anchovies.

Ischia has its own DOC wines, mostly whites from Biancolella and Forastera grapes grown on steep volcanic terraces. They taste crisp and mineral; local cantinas pour them by the glass for little. Finish with limoncello or rucolino, a bittersweet herb liqueur.

Dinner usually starts around 8:30 pm. Book sunset tables in Forio or Sant'Angelo a day or two ahead in summer.

Honeymoon Tips

  • Thermal water is warm and mineral-rich; limit soaks to about 20 minutes at a time and drink plenty of water.
  • If either of you has heart problems or blood pressure concerns, or if you're pregnant, check with a doctor before long thermal sessions.
  • Bring water shoes for rocky beaches and the Sorgeto pools.
  • Book a hotel that includes thermal pool access; it saves on daily park tickets.
  • Ferries can be cancelled in rough seas, so leave a buffer day before a flight home.
  • Pack swimwear, flip-flops and a cover-up for the thermal parks, plus one smarter outfit each for dinners in Ischia Ponte.

FAQ

Ischia honeymoon FAQ

Is Ischia or Capri better for a honeymoon?

Capri is more glamorous and more expensive, with intense day-tripper crowds. Ischia is larger, greener and calmer, with thermal spas and better value. Many couples stay on Ischia and visit Capri as a day trip by boat, which gives you both without paying Capri hotel prices every night.

How many nights should we spend on Ischia?

Four to seven nights lets you enjoy a thermal park, a castle visit, a hike, a boat day and a few lazy beach afternoons. Ischia rewards slow travel, so it works best as the relaxing finale to an Italy itinerary rather than a one-night stop.

Do we need a car on Ischia?

No. Buses run around the island frequently and taxis are easy to find. Many couples rent a scooter for a day, though roads are narrow and busy in summer. A car adds ferry costs and parking headaches without much benefit.

What are the best beaches on Ischia?

Maronti in the south is the longest sandy beach, with thermal steam rising from the sand in places. Citara near Forio faces the sunset and sits next to a thermal park. Smaller coves like Sorgeto are best reached by water taxi. Many beaches have both paid loungers and free strips.

How do we get from Naples to Ischia?

Taxi from Naples airport to the port, about 20 minutes, then take a fast ferry of roughly an hour. Boats run frequently in summer and less often in winter. Buy tickets at the port or online. Ferries from Pozzuoli are another option and can be slightly shorter.
