Beach Island or Grand Tour
The biggest difference is the shape of the trip. A Mauritius honeymoon is usually two resort stays on different coasts, with day trips in between. Le Morne in the southwest has a UNESCO-listed basalt mountain over a long lagoon and the best sunsets. Belle Mare in the east has long white beaches. Grand Baie in the north is the sociable side, with restaurants and catamaran trips.
A Sri Lanka honeymoon is a loop. You start in the Cultural Triangle at Sigiriya, with the rock fortress and Dambulla's painted caves, continue to Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth, ride the train into the hill country around Ella and finish on the south coast at Galle or Mirissa. Most couples hire a car and driver for the whole route.
If packing and unpacking every two nights sounds tiring, Mauritius suits you. If staying put for ten days sounds dull, Sri Lanka will keep you both engaged.
Where You Stay
Mauritius is resort country. Our listings include LUX* Le Morne, The St. Regis Le Morne Resort and Paradis Beachcomber on the Le Morne peninsula, Heritage Le Telfair at Bel Ombre in the south and Constance Prince Maurice on the east coast near Belle Mare. These are beach hotels in the classic sense, with lagoon swimming, spas and half-board dining. Guesthouses and apartments in places like Flic en Flac cost much less.
Sri Lanka's best stays are more varied and more personal. Our listings include Water Garden Sigiriya with villas near the rock, The Kandy House in a historic manor outside Kandy, 98 Acres Resort & Spa among the tea estates at Ella, Amangalla inside the walls of Galle Fort and Cape Weligama on a clifftop above the south coast.
Mauritius gives you consistency and lagoon views. Sri Lanka gives you a different kind of room every few nights, from plantation bungalows to colonial grand hotels.
Seasons and Monsoons
Mauritius has two seasons. Summer, roughly November to April, is hot and humid with the warmest water and short tropical downpours. It is also cyclone season, highest from late December to March, so buy travel insurance for that window. Winter, May to October, is drier and cooler, with coastal highs in the mid 70s to around 80°F. April to early June and September to early December are the sweet spots.
Sri Lanka runs on coasts rather than seasons. From December to April the south, the west and the hill country are at their best, which is peak season. From May to September the east coast around Trincomalee takes over, while the elephant gathering at Minneriya peaks around August and September. October and November can be unsettled almost everywhere.
For a December to March honeymoon, Sri Lanka's classic loop has the edge. For May or October, Mauritius is more dependable for beach time.
Wildlife and Water
Mauritius is about what is in the lagoon. Waist to chest deep water stretches far out to the reef, which makes kayaking, paddleboarding and lazy snorkeling easy even when the open ocean is rough. Early boats from Tamarin look for spinner and bottlenose dolphins resting in the bays. Choose an operator that limits boat numbers and keeps its distance.
Sri Lanka is about what is on land. Yala has the best odds of a leopard on early morning drives. Udawalawe is reliable for elephants. Minneriya and Kaudulla draw big herds in the dry months. Off the south coast near Mirissa, whale-watching trips run from December to April. Sea currents are strong on many southern and western beaches, so swim where hotels and locals say it is safe.
If the two of you dream of jeep safaris and big animals, Sri Lanka delivers what Mauritius cannot. If you want calm water outside your room every morning, Mauritius wins.
What It Costs
Mauritius leans upscale. Comfortable four-star beach hotels often run around $250 to $450 a night for two with breakfast or half board, while well-known five-star resorts typically start around $600 and can pass $1,500 in peak weeks. In our listings, rates start from roughly $300 at Paradis Beachcomber up to around $900 at Constance Prince Maurice. Eating out locally is cheap, with dholl puri for a dollar or two.
Sri Lanka is better value. Midrange boutique hotels run very roughly $80 to $200 a night, while luxury plantation bungalows and design hotels often run $350 to $900 or more, frequently with meals. Our listings range from about $300 at The Kandy House to around $850 at Amangalla. A car and driver is commonly $60 to $100 a day.
All figures are approximate and swing with season. For the same budget, Sri Lanka usually buys more nights of luxury.
Flights and Getting Around
Neither has nonstop flights from the US. Both take roughly 20 to 26 hours door to door. For Mauritius, Emirates through Dubai is the most popular routing, with Air France and Air Mauritius from Paris, British Airways from London and Turkish Airlines from Istanbul. For Sri Lanka, couples usually connect on Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad, Turkish Airlines or Singapore Airlines into Colombo (CMB).
On the ground, Mauritius is easy. The island is roughly 40 miles long, transfers run 30 to 90 minutes and a rental car or a driver for a day or two covers the sights. Traffic drives on the left.
Sri Lanka is slower. Roads average around 20 to 25 mph inland, which is why most couples hire a driver for the whole loop. The Kandy to Ella train is the scenic highlight, so book seats as soon as reservations open. Many long-haul flights land in the small hours, so book your first night ahead.
Health, Safety and Etiquette
The State Department rates both Mauritius and Sri Lanka Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution. In Mauritius the concern is mainly petty theft from beaches, cars and ATMs, so use the hotel safe and never leave bags visible in a rental car. In Sri Lanka the advisory cites civil unrest and terrorism. Avoid any protest, which is mainly a Colombo issue. Use a professional driver rather than self-driving.
Mosquito-borne dengue occurs in both, especially in hot, wet months. Pack repellent. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices before you go.
Etiquette is similar. Cover shoulders and knees at temples and mosques, remove shoes and keep swimwear for the beach. Sri Lanka has some extra rules: never pose with your back to a Buddha statue and cover any Buddha tattoos. Public affection beyond holding hands draws stares outside resort areas in both countries.
