The short answer

Collioure is a small Mediterranean harbor village near Spain, loved by Matisse and ideal for couples who want swimming, art, wine and good food without Riviera prices. Go in June or September and stay three or four nights. Fly via Barcelona or Paris. Hotels are limited, so book early. Expect pebble beaches rather than long stretches of sand.

Best for
  • Couples who love art and small villages
  • Combining France with Barcelona
  • Wine tasting and sea swimming
Maybe skip it if
  • You want long sandy beaches
  • You prefer big resorts with many facilities

Collioure is one of the most romantic small seaside villages in southern France, with much less bustle than the Riviera. It sits on the Côte Vermeille, the last stretch of French coast before Spain, where the Pyrenees run down into the Mediterranean. The harbor has a fortified royal castle, a church whose bell tower rises straight from the water and pastel houses that drew Matisse and Derain here in 1905, when they painted the works that launched Fauvism.

The best months are May, June and September: warm days, swimmable sea and fewer people. July and August are hot and busy, with French holidaymakers filling the narrow lanes.

Plan three or four nights. Swim from small pebble beaches, walk coastal paths, taste wines from terraced vineyards and cross into Spain for a day. Collioure combines well with Carcassonne, about 1.5 hours away, or Barcelona, about two hours south.

Why Collioure Is Worth It

Collioure offers the Mediterranean village atmosphere many couples imagine when they picture southern France. The Château Royal guards one side of the harbor and the bell tower of Notre-Dame-des-Anges stands on the other. Fishing boats painted in bright colors still pull up on the beach.

Art is part of its identity. Matisse and Derain spent the summer of 1905 painting here. The town marks the spots where they set up with reproductions on a walking trail. Artists' studios and galleries line the lanes.

The surroundings are just as appealing. Terraced vineyards climb the slopes behind the town, Fort Saint-Elme looks down from a ridge and the coastal path links small coves to the neighboring ports.

When to Go

May and June bring warm weather, flowering hillsides and sea temperatures that climb toward swimming comfort by late June. September is often the best month of all, with warm water and calmer streets.

July and August are hot and very busy. The village is small, so parking and beach space become scarce. Book hotels and restaurants well ahead and plan swims for early morning or late afternoon.

The tramontane, a strong northwest wind, can blow at any time of year, making some days cool and choppy. In winter Collioure is quiet, sunny and pleasant for walking, but many hotels and restaurants close. The sea is too cold for most swimmers.

Where to Stay

Relais des Trois Mas, a four-star hotel on the rocks at the edge of the bay, has sea-view rooms, a pool and access to a pebble beach. Its restaurant, La Balette, holds a Michelin star.

In the village, Les Templiers is a long-running family hotel decorated with art, steps from the harbor. La Casa Païral, in a 19th-century townhouse with a garden and pool, is a quiet option close to the center.

Les Roches Brunes is a small hotel on the rocks with views across the bay and direct sea access.

For more space, consider a villa in the hills among the vineyards, a short drive from the village. Rooms in Collioure are limited, so book early for summer.

Romantic Things to Do

Swim at the small beaches beside the Château Royal or from the rocks near the bell tower. The water is clear. A mask and snorkel reveal fish around the rocks.

Walk the Chemin du Fauvisme, a trail marked with reproductions of paintings at the spots where they were made. Then visit the Musée d'Art Moderne in a villa above the bay.

Hike up to Fort Saint-Elme for views over the coast, or follow the coastal path to Port-Vendres for lunch by the harbor.

Tour the terraced vineyards of Banyuls and Collioure with a winemaker. In the evening, take a sunset sea kayak trip along the Côte Vermeille, or drive to Cadaqués in Spain, the white village where Salvador Dalí lived.

Getting There and Around

There are no nonstop flights from the US to this corner of France. The easiest options are flying to Barcelona, which has nonstops from several US cities, then driving about two hours, or flying to Paris and taking the TGV to Perpignan in about five hours.

Perpignan-Rivesaltes Airport (PGF) has domestic flights and is about 35 minutes by car. From Perpignan station, regional trains reach Collioure in under half an hour. The village station is a short walk from the harbor.

A car helps for vineyards and day trips, but parking in Collioure is tight, especially in summer. Many couples park on the edge of town and walk in, or skip the car for a few days.

Food and Drink

Collioure is famous for its anchovies, salted and cured in local workshops where you can taste and buy jars to take home. Seafood is the focus of most menus, from grilled sardines to bouillabaisse-style fish stews.

Catalan influence is strong here. Look for pan con tomate, grilled vegetables, crème catalane and shared plates at tapas bars.

The wines are a highlight. Collioure appellation reds and rosés grow on the same steep terraces as Banyuls, a sweet fortified wine served with dessert or chocolate. A tasting at a cellar in Banyuls-sur-Mer or Collioure is a fine way to spend an afternoon.

Dinner starts late in summer, often around 8:30 pm.

Honeymoon Tips

Beaches are mostly pebbly or small-grained, so bring water shoes and a cushioned mat or book a sunbed.

On windy tramontane days, the sea can be rough and the beaches empty. Use those days for vineyard tours or a trip inland to the Pyrenees.

In high summer, watch for jellyfish and check local warnings. Lifeguards cover the main beaches in season.

The village is hilly with steep lanes, so comfortable shoes help. Evening wear is relaxed and stylish, from linen shirts to light dresses.

Try to spend at least one night rather than visiting as a day trip. Collioure feels completely different once the day visitors leave and the harbor lights come on.
