Ubud vs Lombok

Temple bells and river-gorge villas, or quiet horseshoe bays with a volcano on the skyline.

The short answer

Choose Ubud if you want culture, food and luxury: river-gorge villas at Four Seasons Sayan or Mandapa, temple ceremonies, rice terraces and some of Bali's best restaurants. Choose Lombok if you want beaches you can nearly have to yourselves, surf lessons, waterfall hikes and a slower, more rural pace at lower prices. Ubud has no beach. Lombok has fewer polished resorts. They are only a 40-minute flight apart, so many couples pair them.

This is less an either-or than a question of emphasis. Ubud and Lombok sit close together in Indonesia but offer almost opposite honeymoons.

Ubud is Bali's cultural heart, set in the green hills of Gianyar about an hour or more north of the airport. Galleries, dance performances and daily offerings fill the town. Outside it, rice paddies and river gorges hold some of the finest jungle resorts in Asia. It is inland, so the romance comes from misty mornings over the Ayung River and long dinners to the sound of frogs, not from the sea.

Lombok sits just east of Bali across the Lombok Strait. Its south coast around Kuta Lombok is a run of white-sand bays separated by green headlands, many still undeveloped. Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, rises inland. Most of the Sasak people are Muslim, so you hear the call to prayer instead of temple gamelan. The pace is slower, the beaches emptier and the resorts fewer.

  • Food is a big part of the trip
  • You don't mind adding a beach elsewhere in Bali

  • You want wide, quiet beaches without Bali's crowds
  • Surf lessons in a gentle bay sound fun
  • You'd enjoy road trips to waterfalls and viewpoints
  • Your budget favors boutique villas at $100 to $300 a night
  • You prefer a rural, low-key atmosphere

Culture or Coastline

Ubud's days fill themselves with culture. Walk the Campuhan Ridge, where two rivers meet below a grassy spine. Visit the Puri Lukisan, Neka and Agung Rai museums to see how Balinese art developed. Join a water purification ritual at Tirta Empul with a guide. Watch Legong or Kecak dancers in a palace courtyard. Temple festivals happen often. Visitors are usually welcome to watch respectfully.

Lombok's days revolve around the coast. On the south shore you can drive ten minutes from Kuta and have a bay like Mawun or Semeti nearly to yourselves on a weekday morning. Climb Bukit Merese above Tanjung Aan before sunset for a view over several bays. The island's culture is more low-key, with Sasak weaving villages such as Sade showing ikat and songket.

If you want to learn and explore, Ubud delivers more. If you want space and sand, Lombok wins easily.

Where You Will Stay

Ubud has some of the best resorts in Asia, many lining the Ayung River gorge west of town. Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan greets you with a suspension bridge onto a rooftop lotus pond, with villas cascading to the river. Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, has walled pool villas on the riverbank and dinners in bamboo pods at Kubu. Capella Ubud, designed by Bill Bensley, offers themed luxury tents with saltwater pools on a ridge in Keliki. Boutique villas in the rice fields add choice at lower prices.

Lombok is simpler. Kuta Lombok is the hub of the south, with cafes, surf schools and small hotels. The Mandalika area to the east has big international resorts such as the Pullman Lombok Merujani Mandalika. Selong Belanak has a few stylish boutique villas on a gentle bay. The Oberoi Beach Resort Lombok, near Medana Bay in the northwest, is the quiet luxury choice.

For top-tier luxury, Ubud has far more options.

Seasons

Both follow Indonesia's broad dry and wet pattern, with slight differences.

Ubud's drier months run roughly April to October, with August usually the driest. July, August and the late-December holidays are busiest, while May, June and September balance good weather with fewer crowds. From about November to March, heavy afternoon downpours alternate with clear spells, the jungle is at its greenest and rates often drop. Nights are cooler than on the coast.

Lombok's dry season runs roughly May to September, with the south coast driest. Surf season broadly runs from late March through September. October and April are good shoulder months. The wet season, about November to March, brings heavy storms and muddy back roads. Rinjani trekking routes close for part of it. Check the race calendar if you plan to stay near the Mandalika circuit, since event weekends fill hotels.

May, June and September suit both well.

Getting There and Around

Both start with a long trip from the US, with no nonstop flights to Indonesia. Most couples connect through Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei or Hong Kong into Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), with total travel often past 20 hours.

From DPS, Ubud is about 1 to 1.5 hours by car, longer in traffic. A private transfer from your resort is easiest. Once there, use resort shuttles, private drivers or ride-hailing apps. A driver for a full day is affordable and lets you combine temples and rice terraces without stress.

Lombok needs one more step. A domestic flight of about 40 minutes takes you from DPS to Lombok International Airport (LOP), about 30 minutes from Kuta Lombok. Some international connections land at LOP directly via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. Fast boats link Bali and Lombok but can be rough, so choose an established operator. On the island, hire a car with a driver. Roads between the southern bays are steep in places.

Costs

Lombok is generally cheaper at the same comfort level. All figures are approximate and seasonal.

In Ubud, the big Ayung River resorts run from about $700 to well over $1,500 a night, higher in July and August. Boutique villas in the rice fields can cost $150 to $400. Local warungs are inexpensive. Balinese cooking classes and spa treatments are good value outside luxury hotels.

On Lombok, good boutique villas run very roughly $100 to $300 a night. International resorts in Mandalika and The Oberoi in the northwest cost more. Warung meals cost a few dollars, beachfront stalls at Selong Belanak and Tanjung Aan sell grilled fish and coconuts. A car with driver for the day is affordable.

If you want to save money, base yourselves on Lombok for the beach part of your trip and keep the Ubud splurge short. Alcohol is widely available in Lombok's tourist areas but less common in villages.

Active Days Together

Ubud's activities are gentle and varied. Watch sunrise over the Tegallalang rice terraces before the crowds arrive. Raft the Ayung River through a green gorge, then book a couples massage. Learn to make spice pastes and sambal in a Balinese cooking class. Visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, keeping food out of sight and your distance from the macaques.

Lombok is more physical. Take a surf lesson together at Selong Belanak, where the sandy bottom and gentle waves make falling off painless. Drive north to Senaru for the waterfalls: Sendang Gile is a short walk from the road, while Tiu Kelep needs a wade through a river. In the southwest, hire a boat around the small islands off Sekotong for snorkeling and empty sandbars. Fit couples can trek Mount Rinjani, a demanding multi-day climb with cold nights near the crater rim.

Couples who like to earn their sunset drink will enjoy Lombok.

Combining the Two

Because they are so close, the best plan for many couples is both. Start with three or four nights in Ubud to recover from the flight, explore temples and rice terraces and enjoy a jungle villa. Then fly 40 minutes to Lombok for four or five nights of beaches, surf and waterfalls. Return to Bali for a last night near the airport before flying home.

Dress and etiquette shift slightly between them. In Ubud, carry a sarong and sash for temples and keep shoulders and knees covered. On Lombok, both of you should cover shoulders and knees in villages and markets. Swimwear belongs on the beach. During Ramadan, eat discreetly in public away from tourist zones.

Dengue is present in both, so use repellent at dawn and dusk. If you're pregnant or hoping to be soon, check CDC travel health notices for Indonesia. Surf beaches on Lombok can have strong rip currents, so swim in sheltered bays.
